- PublicationAccès libreMoving to a “flat with referee” in older age: an embodied and social transition(2025)
; Abstract Moving in older age is a critical experience in the person’s life trajectory as it may require an important reorganization of their relation to the social and material environment. In order to better understand this experience, we propose to address it drawing on the concepts of rupture and transition as developed in the frame of sociocultural lifecourse psychology. We complete this theoretical framework with the distinction between frame and space and with literature on bodies and embodiment. We present a case study conducted in a building of so-called flats with referee, a type of flats developed in the frame of a political reform addressing demographic ageing, in a Swiss canton. We focus in particular on interviews with inhabitants before and after they moved to these flats. In the analysis, we discuss two aspects of this rupture/transition which, we argue, play an important role in the persons’ experiences: firstly, the embodied dimension of the experience of rupture, which is notably related to the experience of a new physical environment; secondly, the social relations in these buildings designed especially to favor relationships among neighbors. Through this analysis, we aim at contributing to the understanding of development in older age from a sociocultural psychological perspective and to the literature on ruptures and transitions as we highlight theoretical and methodological implications. - PublicationAccès libreDesigning landscapes of affordances for ageing in place(2025)

; Alex GillespieA powerful voice in our community faded out on December 1st, 2024. It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the death of Professor Ivana Marková, aged 86. Ivana Marková developed an unique, inspiring, dialogical perspective in social and cultural psychology; she saw dialogism as an ontology, an epistemology and ethics. She also lived dialogism: a life of rich long-term dialogues with so many friends and colleagues all over the world. Ivana Marková was an Associate Editor of Culture & Psychology. She was a visiting professor in many universities, gave keynote addresses in numerous countries, and was a mentor to generations of social psychologists. Ivana Marková will be missed by many academic and professional communities around the world. We have lost a unique personality, a paradigm-challenger, a mentor, and a friend. - PublicationAccès libreL’interrogation des normes masculines lors de ruptures amoureuses chez les hommes à travers le concept de liminalitéLes ruptures amoureuses chez les hommes peuvent mettre à rude épreuve certaines normes de masculinité. En effet, si la vulnérabilité, la perte de contrôle ou encore le dévoi-lement et l’expression de ses sentiments peuvent être des ressources précieuses pour tra-verser le deuil de la rupture, celles-ci ne répondent pas forcément aux comportements genrés attendus de la part des hommes en cas de rupture amoureuse. À travers une ap-proche socioculturelle et développementale de la psychologie mais aussi les « masculini-ties studies » et les études genre, ce travail propose d’interroger comment les normes de masculinité peuvent être questionnées ou renégociées chez les hommes dans le cadre de ruptures amoureuses, à travers le concept de liminalité. Sept entretiens avec des hommes âgés de 19 à 27 ans en relations hétérosexuelles ont été menés pour cette re-cherche.
- PublicationAccès libreThe pleasure of thinking in human development(2024-03-27)Observing children and scientists clearly suggests that people may experience pleasure in thinking. Surprisingly, pleasure is rarely addressed in developmental psychology. The argument of the paper is that pleasure of thinking may play an important role in learning and development; it draws on secondary analysis of existing studies and theoretical work to ground this proposition. The paper first draws on classical observations of young children to highlight five modalities of pleasure in thinking: curiosity, functional pleasure, discovery, dialogical pleasure, and a meta-pleasure. It then examines the becoming of these pleasures during the school years, highlighting the conditions for these pleasures to develop. The paper then suggests that such pleasure can be pursued and cultivated during adulthood. Theoretical and empirical implications are finally highlighted.
- PublicationAccès libreL’émergence du possible dans le cadre des transitions de genre : une étude exploratoire en psychologie socioculturelleDans une société oscillant entre invisibilité (Namaste, 2000) et oppression (Medico et al., 2020), comment les personnes trans parviennent-elles à se penser et s’imaginer dans un autre genre ? A travers une recherche exploratoire d’inspiration phénoménologique, et en se basant sur les travaux en psychologie socioculturelle développés autour de l’imagination et du possible (Zittoun & Gillespie, 2016 ; Glăveanu, 2021), j’examine la manière dont le possible émerge dans les parcours de transition de genre. A partir de données empiriques issues d’entretiens avec des personnes concernées, je propose un modèle composé de quatre processus centrés sur la notion de reconnaissance. Je soutiens qu’à travers ces différentes dimensions s’élabore une reconfiguration de l’impossible en possible, et peut aboutir finalement à des actions concrètes dans la vie des personnes concernées. Les apports de cette recherche permettent 1) de consolider les connaissances académiques concernant le rôle de l’imagination dans les trajectoires trans ; 2) de renforcer l’intervention clinique transaffirmative (Medico & Pullen-Sansfaçon, 2017) ; 3) de proposer des pistes d’exploration du genre pour les personnes concernées.
- PublicationRestriction temporaireWhat Is the Nexus between Migration and Mobility? A Framework to Understand the Interplay between Different Ideal Types of Human Movement(2024)
; ; ; ; ; Categorising certain forms of human movement as ‘migration’ and others as ‘mobility’ has far-reaching consequences. We introduce the migration–mobility nexus as a framework for other researchers to interrogate the relationship between these two categories of human movement and explain how they shape different social representations. Our framework articulates four ideal-typical interplays between categories of migration and categories of mobility: continuum (fluid mobilities transform into more stable forms of migration and vice versa), enablement (migration requires mobility, and mobility can trigger migration), hierarchy (migration and mobility are political categories that legitimise hierarchies of movement) and opposition (migration and mobility are pitted against each other). These interplays reveal the normative underpinnings of different categories, which we argue are too often implicit and unacknowledged. - PublicationAccès librePsychology of Change(2024)

; ; ; ; ; ; Emmanuel SchwabLa vie quotidienne des personnes âgées se déroule dans des lieux concrets, avec des objets et des propriétés matérielles spécifiques ainsi que des relations sociales particulières. Toutefois, cette sociomatérialité constitutive est plus qu’un décor ou que de simples outils pour l’activité ; nous suggérons ici qu’elle participe de la vie psychique et quotidienne de la personne. Adoptant une perspective de psychologie culturelle du cours de la vie et nous appuyant sur les travaux de Kurt Lewin et de René Kaës, nous proposons de considérer les fonctions de contenance et de transformation des espaces vécus dans le développement des personnes âgées. En nous basant sur une recherche en cours, nous examinerons des transformations de configurations sociomatérielles à trois échelles, et les occasions de remaniement psychique que cela suscite. Nous verrons d’abord comment la vie de quartier ou de village peut soutenir les espaces vécus des personnes ; nous considérerons ensuite la manière dont les personnes peuvent se sentir « chez soi » tout en déménageant, car l’espace vécu peut être réorganisé dans un champ donné ; nous discuterons enfin du rôle d’objets spécifiques dans ces dynamiques.
